WUWM's Wholesale Markets Commitment

World Union of Wholesale Markets

The World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) pledges to the goals and actions developed by the coalitions and action tracks we have joined and helped built through this Summit.

We will continue to ensure fresh food availability, excellent food safety practices, and traceability, work hard to decrease food loss and waste and spread best practices among our wholesale markets and our networks, and invest our efforts and directions into ensuring affordable widespread available fresh food systems, aiming to achieve zero hunger by 2030 and hopefully before.

In one of the proposed solutions of this summit, through the action track advancing equitable livelihoods, our wholesale markets, together with supermarkets, are committing to source at least one-third of our fresh food supply from local producers. We are also devoted to follow-up on all other solutions and the new collaborations that are established through this important Summit.

Our wholesale markets feed around 3 billion people per day with fresh food. Most of the fresh produce that citizens can find on street food markets or local shops comes from wholesale markets. We, therefore, have a key role to play in fresh food distribution, and together with all of you, the World Union of Wholesale Markets is deeply dedicated in meeting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Enabling a transition for a fresh food system that is equitable, healthy, inclusive, and sustainable has always been one of WUWM’s main objectives. Together and with our commitments and efforts through this Summit and beyond, we will make it happen!

Please find a video of this commitment by WUWM Chairman Stéphane Layani here.
