Commitments to action

People-Centred Innovation and Data and Digital Solutions

FAO, Mercy Corps, World Economic Forum, 75 organizations from public, private and social sector are part of the initiative.

The collective commitment aims to support countries and communities to meet national and regional priorities on food systems pathways on a more holistic understanding and delivery of innovation for successful outcomes that are effective and improve the scale, quality, and equity of resilient, climate-smart, and healthy food systems. Innovation must be understood in a broad-based inclusive way on how we collaborate with different stakeholders, including the most vulnerable, and how we use existing and new knowledge and technologies, scientific, indigenous, and others to inform those evidence-based solutions through an ecosystem approach. Four Innovation areas to support national food systems pathways to fast-track transformation by fostering holistic and inclusive innovation: National and Regional Ecosystems, to improve how we innovate nationally and regionally; Societal and Institutional Innovation, to improve how we collaborate; Knowledge and Technological Innovation, to improve knowledge systems and technology solutions; Data and Digital, to improve and integrate data and digital systems.

To enable people-led innovation powered, where appropriate, by data and digital solutions to identify and respond to food systems opportunities and challenges dynamically and at scale, actors across sectors and disciplines will need to work together using shared innovation principles, that have been defined in the Innovation Policy Brief (attached). Some of the specific implementation mechanisms that have been identified are:

  • National and Regional Food Innovation Hubs and cross-sector Agricultural Transformation Agencies to stimulate innovation through multi-stakeholder action to develop local innovation ecosystems to meet local needs.
  • Open and inclusive data and digital ecosystem created by three delivery platforms: Digital Data Cornucopia to create common resource-efficient data infrastructure; Future of Food Marketplace, a model for efficient, interactive, and climate-smart markets; One Map to generate public good data assets.
  • Reaching 100 million farmers with nature-positive innovation through a multi-stakeholder platform to increase investment in innovation for nature positive production (more here).
  • Food systems transformation support facility will be an operational hub for countries offering support and expertise for multi-stakeholder collaboration for food systems change.
  • Hand in Hand Initiative for countries to accelerate the agricultural transformation to eradicate poverty and end hunger and malnutrition.
  • Institutional Innovation to support National Food Systems Transformation Pathways that develops autonomous public sector organizations to work across the sector and disciplines, such as the Agricultural Transformation Agency (ATA) model.
  • 50×2030 – a multistakeholder initiative that aims to support 50 low-income and low middle-income countries around the world in
