Improving Nutritional Status of Local Communities Through Providing Hospital Food in Cambodia

Sho Sato, International Medical Volunteers Japan Heart

NPO Japan Heart opened a children’s medical center in Cambodia in 2018 and is working on medical treatment for childhood cancer. There are few hospitals that provide hospital meals in Cambodia, and the patients’ families purchase and give meals at the stalls and markets around the hospitals. However, the knowledge about hygiene and nutrition of the patient’s family is not sufficient, and the patient doesn’t always receive sufficient nutrition for treatment. In particular, we considered it essential to provide a hygienic and nutritious diet for the effective treatment of childhood cancer patients. The purpose is that pediatric cancer patients have a hygienic and nutritious diet during hospitalization and after discharge.

Japanese dietitians provided hygiene and nutrition education to local staff. We estimated the menu which was made by local staff based on MDD (minimum dietary diversity) and intake by eating rate survey, nutrition status by physical measurement. We also teach local staffs that how to give hygiene and nutrition education to the patients and their families, and now local staffs start this education.
