Better Data Better Decisions for Nature-Positive Production
Faced with a matter of years to protect, sustainably manage, and restore our landscapes that support food systems, we urgently need to make the right decisions supported by transparent, accessible, accurate, and credible data. Most importantly, better data can drive better decisions for nature-positive production when is it relevant and aligned to the needs of critical stakeholders (local, national, global) protecting, managing, restoring, and investing in landscapes. This coalition will align data, stakeholders, and evidence as a catalyst for sustainable landscapes and food systems transformation.
Science based evidence to prioritize this coalition
Political resolve and financing commitments for nature positive production is increasing rapidly with more than 1 billion hectares (an area the size of the United States of America) of restoration commitments by governments (1), 1 trillion dollars market capitalization of companies with deforestation-free commitments (2), and 1 billion dollars of financing for tropical deforestation reductions (3). Accurate and timely data aligned to stakeholder needs and evidence, on the state and change of landscapes, is critical to drive decision making processes and support the implementation of ambitious political commitments for sustainable landscapes and the food systems they support (4,5,6,7).
The Coalition is needed to align quality data, stakeholders, and evidence – bridging the disconnect between data and critical stakeholders with science and practice-based evidence. Aligning stakeholders and data can bring transparency and feed a process that supports successful interventions and empowerment at the local, national, and global level while also attracting needed investment.
Political resolve to achieve sustainable landscapes combined with advances in global and local monitoring solutions, transformational technologies, and data availability create the conditions to move from ambition to action by including critical decision makers, stakeholders, and evidence in the process.
Mechanisms of implementation
We will explore the conditions necessary to move from ambition to action to support sustainable landscapes and food systems transformation based on data, monitoring systems and platforms, stakeholder engagement, and evidence. We will bring together critical stakeholders across multiple scales to reflect on the monitoring data and other practice-based evidence to ensure data and monitoring systems are relevant and fit-for-purpose in driving better decisions for nature-positive production.
We will build on work taking place in many countries at different scales on data-driven approaches to protection, sustainable management and restoration and share experiences across regions and globally including governments, local actors, NGOs and the private sector.

This coalition will support and leverage the efforts of other initiates emerging from the Summit such as the Global Soil Hub, Deforestation-free and conversion-free food supply chains and Innovation for nature-positive production (including AIM for Climate).
Monitoring and Evaluation
For monitoring and evaluation (M&E), the coalition will leverage several existing efforts on monitoring such as FAO’s Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM) developed to track progress under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, IUCN’s Restoration Barometer, the Global Restoration Observatory, and World Resources Institute’s Global Forest Watch and Land and Carbon Watch. M&E will respect the SDG process as an overarching framework, and the mandates of the Rio Convention Secretariats (UNFCCC, UNCCD, CBD), specifically indicators and targets for UNCCD’s Land Degradation Neutrality, and CBD’s Global Biodiversity Framework.
