Action Track 3
Action Track 3 will work to optimize environmental resource use in food production, processing and distribution, thereby reducing biodiversity loss, pollution, water use, soil degradation and greenhouse gas emissions. In its pursuit of this goal, the Action Track will aim to deepen understanding of the constraints and opportunities facing smallholder farmers and small-scale enterprises along the food value chain. It will also strive to support food system governance that realigns incentives to reduce food losses and other negative environmental impacts.
Need to start valuing freshwater fisheries – world’s forgotten fishes

Discussion

In discussions about food security, the importance of freshwater fisheries is invariably undervalued and overlooked. Yet freshwater fisheries provide 200 million people with their main source of animal protein and some vital nutrients, including many vulnerable communities and indigenous people in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Time for policy makers to start factoring these critical fisheries (at least 13% of global fish catch but current estimates are undoubtedly a major underestimate) into development decisions….before they are lost. Important new report from 16 global conservation groups underlines the importance of these fisheries – and what needs to be done to safeguard them.
