Sustainable Food Systems Programme of the One Planet Network

Federal Office for Agriculture (Switzerland), WWF, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Costa Rica)

The Sustainable Food Systems Programme (SFSP) of the One Planet Network is a global multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at accelerating the shift toward more sustainable food systems, that promotes a food systems approach to more holistic and inclusive policy-making [see SFSP Terms of Reference attached]. It is based on the mandate of the 10-Year Framework for Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP) that was adopted by Heads of State at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) and was recognized as an implementation mechanism for SDG 12 [see Rio+20 adopted 10YFP text attached].

With six years of experience in promoting systems thinking, the SFSP brings together more than 180 members from all stakeholder groups. Members collaborate on initiatives that address food systems challenges, ranging from normative, advocacy, and policy support activities, to research projects as well as on-the-ground implementation activities [see SFSP membership list attached as well as]. The SFSP’s advisory committee includes many key players involved in the Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) process such as FAO, IFAD, IPES-Food, UNEP, UNDP, World Benchmarking Alliance, WEF, WRAP, and WWF, as well as countries such as Argentina, South Africa, Switzerland, Tunisia, United States, and Vietnam.

Through its members, the SFSP is present in several of the coalitions that emerged in the context of the UNFSS (e.g. coalitions on agroecology, healthy diets, food losses, and waste, etc.) and can actively support these, in particular by strengthening the systems perspective as well as participatory approaches. In addition, the SFSP can strengthen the links between the coalitions and the 2030 Agenda through its reporting channel to the HLPF.

To assist stakeholders in transforming their food systems, the SFSP has produced several tools including a “Sustainable Food Systems Glossary”, a Collaborative Framework for Food Systems Transformation, a series of Case Studies on Food Systems Transformation, and a Study on Multi-Stakeholder Mechanisms [forthcoming]. Based on these tools and with the support of its Community of Practice on Food Systems Approach on the Ground, the SFSP organizes conferences, roundtables, and dialogues to assist countries in transitioning towards more holistic and inclusive policy-making processes [see reports of selected conferences and dialogues attached]. Finally, the SFSP is actively involved in an initiative championed by FAO, UNEP and UNDP, and others as part of the UNFSS follow-up architecture, which aims at supporting countries in implementing their national pathways for food systems transformation in support of the 2030 Agenda.
