Coalition on Sustainable and Inclusive Urban Food Systems

FAO (The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and GAIN (The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition) as the Secretariat of the Urban Food Systems Working Group, Column P

During the process of the UNFSS, the critical role of the urban in the overall food system transformation has become more evident than ever.  Such recognition opens the door to rethinking the ways in which urban food systems are managed and to strengthening the participation of stakeholders at all levels, from local to global.  A key element of the envisioned governance system to move the transformation forward is a two-way link between urban, local and national governments.  Such link enables urban and local governments to actively contribute to national food system polices and strategies.  It also grants them wider policy space and support for implementing appropriate policies and programmes at the sub-national level.

An informal urban food systems working group (UFS WG), established in 2020 under the leadership  of FAO and GAIN, has been actively engaging in the UNFSS process in order to raise the voices of urban and local governments and stakeholders in the dialogues and actions related to food systems transformation.  The Working Group commits to continue advocating and working towards the establishment of a coalition/alliance to i) implement and follow through the game changing solutions and other contributions that have been elaborated in the course of the FSS and ii) strengthen the sustainability of urban and local food systems and their contributions to food system transformation.  Such a coalition/alliance aspires to achieve the following:

  • Ensure that the importance of urban food systems transformation is highlighted in relevant global, regional, and national fora
  • Create space for dialogue among stakeholders at all levels ( geographical, administrative, political) on priority actions for urban food system transformation
  • Leverage stakeholders’ knowledge and experiences and ensure the production, management and distribution of appropriate data for evidence-based policy design and implementation
  • Mobilise and leverage resources to support the capacities of urban administrations to integrate food into urban policies, planning and investments
  • Promote linkages between national and sub-national governments to enable coherent food policies and empower local governments (legally, financially and institutionally)
  • Leverage and promote coherence of actions by existing networks, private sector and civil society initiatives attempting to improve urban food systems
