Commitments to action
Statement of Action - Small-scale and family farmers
CARE, IFAD, Netherlands Food Partnership,Rabo Foundation, Rabobank, ISEA:, Global Farmer Network, Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture’, Solidaridad (TBC), IDH: The Sustainable Trade Initiative (TBC), Unilever (TBCO
- There are ~500 mln small scale and family farmers globally
- ~80% of the food consumed in Asia and Sub Saharan Africa is produced by these farmers
- They, therefore, play a key role in the food system transitions in developing economies and local food systems and can be considered as real ‘change agents’
- There are many public and private initiatives addressing the need to improve their incomes and livelihoods
- However a key challenge is the fragmentation of service provision, where many operators tend to be small in size, so the key is creating awareness and innovative structures that strengthen the complementarity
- This Summit delivers powerful action agendas to address precisely this and empower the role of small-scale and family farmers as change agents.
By unlocking 1. access to technical services/upskilling and 2. access to markets (finance, technology, innovation) - We call on the member states to support these initiatives and action coalitions that will help build these action agendas with the support of the RBA’s: e.g. 100% Living Incomes / Wages, Local Food Systems, Food Producers Declaration and Digitized Smallholder Ecosystems
