Commitments registry: Commitments to action

Now is the time to share commitments to action from all stakeholders.

The Secretary-General’s Food Systems Summit has engaged hundreds of thousands of people from around the world and across all constituencies to accelerate action to transform food systems to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development over the last 18 months.

Action Areas

Five action areas have emerged through the process as the primary areas to accelerate action in order to deliver on the 2030 Agenda through food systems. These action areas will help underpin the Secretary-General’s Statement of Action and achieve our shared goals for People, our Planet and shared Prosperity.

Nourish All People

This action area seeks to support work to end hunger and all forms of malnutrition and reduce the incidence of non-communicable disease, enabling everyone to be nourished and healthy. All people at all times should have access to sufficient quality and quantities of affordable and safe food. Furthermore, this area will focus on work to build consumer demand for sustainably produced food, strengthen local value chains, improve nutrition, and promote the reuse and recycling of food resources, especially among the most vulnerable.

Boost Nature-Based Solutions of Production

This action area seeks to support work to optimize environmental resource use in food production, processing and distribution, thereby reducing biodiversity loss, pollution, water use, soil degradation and greenhouse gas emissions. It will deepen understanding of the constraints and opportunities facing farmers, fishers, pastoralists, and small-scale enterprises along the food value chain. It will seek to support food systems governance that realigns incentives to reduce food losses and other negative environmental impacts while boosting positive externalities.

Build Resilience to Vulnerabilities, Shocks, and Stresses

This action area seeks to support work to ensure the continued functionality of sustainable food systems in areas that are prone to conflict or natural disasters. It will enable action to protect food supplies from the impacts of pandemics. The aim is to ensure that all people within a food system are empowered to prepare for, withstand, and recover from instability and to help people everywhere participate in food systems that, despite shocks and stressors, deliver food security, nutrition and equitable livelihoods for all.

Advance Equitable Livelihoods, Decent Work, & Empowered Communities

This action area seeks to support work to eliminate poverty by promoting full and productive employment and decent work for all actors along the food value chain, reducing risks for the world’s poorest, enabling entrepreneurship and addressing the inequitable access to resources and distribution of value. It will improve resilience through social protection and seek to ensure that food systems “leave no one behind.”

Means of Implementation

This Action Area seeks to help countries connect to initiatives, and resources around finance, governance, science and knowledge, innovation, technology and data, capacity, and beyond.

The Action Areas recognize that efforts must be responsive to country priorities, while facilitating systems impact at scale, including through multi-stakeholder initiatives, at local, national, and global levels. At the same time, when taken together, these Action Areas can demonstrate what systemic, integrated action, as envisioned in the 2030 Agenda, looks like. To be effective, priority action should be anchored in the science, evidence, and knowledge that has emerged in the Summit process.

The UN Food Systems Summit process has generated 2,200 ideas for accelerated action from experts and stakeholders, which have been clustered into a menu of 59 solution clusters for consideration by countries and other actors in response to their own particular context and priorities.

There is a wealth of knowledge, expertise, resources and capacity in the global community ready to connect with national and regional pathways.

Commitment registry

As a result of the National Food Systems Summit Dialogues, Member States are developing National Pathways for Food Systems Transformation that are clear visions of what governments, together with different stakeholders, will/can deliver by 2030. Regional Pathways for Food Systems Transformation are being developed as well to address areas of common focus and priority across many countries in a given geographic region.

The Summit process has given rise to several multi-stakeholder initiatives that actors will be ready to commit to by the time of the Summit in order to deliver on the priorities, needs, and gaps identified in national pathways, and it will be a priority to register and recognize as many of these as possible through the Summit moment on September 23.

The Summit Secretariat has developed a commitment register where Member States and stakeholders will be able to register their collective or institutional commitments to action which are aligned to the action areas.
