Commitments to action

Rabobank, WRI, UN/FAO, Microsoft, Solidaridad, ReNature

Together with Microsoft, Rabobank aims to contribute to fighting climate change, poverty and land degradation. In this context, Rabobank aims to launch a platform for carbon sequestration projects that meet those goals. The focus is on realizing agroforestry projects, where carbon sequestration occurs through the increase of biomass, predominantly tree growth. Agroforestry is a land use management system in which trees or shrubs are grown around or among crops or pastureland. A core principle of the Acorn program is a very strong preference for the creation and trade of carbon credits based on actual sequestration (i.e. already realized, ex post) rather than credits based on sequestration that is expected to occur in the future (ex ante).  Acorn aims to provide an entry to the carbon credit market primary for smallholder farmers, the agroforestry projects in scope are by definition of small physical size (1 – 5 ha).Through satellite monitoring and other remote sensing technologies, we need to reach a level of accuracy that enables us to bring the resulting (certified) carbon credits to the market with a high level of transparency and credibility. We believe the answer to finding the balance lies in using scalable, transparent and inexpensive (remote sensing) technologies, including satellite imagery.  In the coming years the Acorn program aims to develop thousands of projects, helping individual smallholder farmers to make the switch to agroforestry: We help them plant suitable trees and train / support them in nurturing trees to maturity. We partner with local organizations: NGO’s, farmer cooperatives, big processors (e.g. coffee, coco), governments, funds, etc. in different countries across continents.
