Achieving Food Equity through Vegetables, legumes and fruits.

Partnership for a Healthier America, There are more than 40 including the YMCA, Walmart, Conagra, Genuine Foods, Triscuit, and many more.

Partnership for a Healthier America, in partnership with with 30 community-based nonprofits dedicated to ending hunger, eight companies and six foundations, will forge additional partnerships to provide a total of 50 million additional servings of vegetables, legumes and fruits between 2020 and 2025. Partners include food banks, public housing, YMCA’s, early childhood education centers, city governments, and community health providers. These vegetables, legumes and fruits are part of an effort to reduce hunger while expanding the availability of healthy, sustainable food in low income communities. The commitment has a direct, measurable impact on SDG #2 (Zero Hunger), SDG#3 (Good Health and Well being), SDG #13 (Climate Action) and SDG#17 (Partnerships to achieve the Goal).

The foundation of the goal is PHA’s Good Food for All program, which is built on four critical planks.

Community led. Our programs begin with local partners who know their communities well. We work with them to target communities most in need, confer on vegetables, and spices that will be most welcome by the community, and on how best to implement the program. While community led, our coalition builds on best practices developed across many programs and regions.

Healthy habits. The Good Food for All program was developed around data showing that when people are exposed to a high volume of produce (two servings per day per family member every day 7 days per week) over time (for 12 successive weeks) they begin to desire produce. So the work is designed to identify, develop and build demand for healthy, sustainable food.

Innovation. We call on new models to support this demand. This includes meal kits, reduced cost CSA shares, unmanned markets and new delivery models. Innovation has never been more necessary than now.
Systems change. This program is designed to develop and reinforce demand for good foods even as it challenges retailers to meet demand and partner with them to develop lasting, sustainable access to communities that need it most.

We will also leverage our deep partnerships with the public and private sector to create a campaign that raises the public’s awareness about the power of healthy, sustainable food and to continue to create a greater demand for these types of foods. We also plan to add to this partnership consumer goods companies who commit to raising awareness about healthy, sustainable foods in effort to drive additional consumer awareness.”
