A Global Action Agenda to Advance Nature-Positive Innovation

Although the World Bank estimates that around US$ 56 billion is spent every year on agricultural research, investment in innovation is not expanding at the rate that is needed to address climate change, nature loss, hunger, and other development objectives. Only 7% of innovation spending in the Global South explicitly targets environmental outcomes. Of this, only around half includes social or human objectives. To unleash the potential of nature-positive innovation, the “Transformation through innovation for nature-positive production” UN Food Systems Summit solution cluster aims to foster investment, deployment, and scaling of innovation that delivers for people, nature, and climate. Taking forward the work of the solution cluster, a global coalition of allies will be developed to support nature-positive innovation linked to the Global Action Agenda for Innovation in Agriculture that will be launched at COP26, engaging numerous organisations and thousands of stakeholders.
This Global Action Agenda seeks to achieve major international commitments:
- Increase investment in agricultural research and innovation to create more climate-resilient, low-emission technologies, and practices in agriculture;
- Ensure at least a third of agricultural research and innovation investments deliver demand-driven solutions across food systems, to protect nature and limit climate change;
- Showcase successful business models and promote public-private partnerships that deploy these innovations on the scale needed to meet the climate and food security challenge;
- Forge consensus on the evidence of what works where, and facilitate inclusive dialogue among food and climate champions around the world on appropriate public, private and civil society solutions.
By signing up to this Global Action Agenda, each stakeholder group will commit to the below actions:
- Farmers: Engage with research projects and the innovation process, holding institutions to account by articulating and communicating their needs, concerns, and priorities;
- Funders of agricultural research and innovation: Increase and reorient funding to accelerate the development and scaling of sustainable technologies and practices;
- Governments: Provide policy support to agricultural research and innovation while repurposing subsidies to enable both;
- Research organisations: Commit to demand-driven solutions that deliver innovations at scale;
- Businesses: Increase and reorient funding for agricultural research and innovation, and scale-up new climate-resilient technologies and practices;
- Investors: Invest in scaling solutions that harness innovations;
- Implementing partners: Commit to the rapid deployment of innovation as part of a wholesale ‘end-to-end’ approach across food systems, from ‘farm to fork’.

Restoring Grasslands, Shrublands, Savannahs & Rangelands – Through Sustainable Extensive Livestock-based Food Systems
The commitment is to form a coalition that will lead action to restore grasslands, shrublands, savannahs & rangelands through sustainable extensive livestock-based food systems, to help optimize environmental resource use in production, reduce biodiversity loss, pollution, water use, soil degradation and greenhouse gas emissions.
The aim of the coalition is to bring together a broad group of producer and consumer countries, companies, and international organizations committed to working together to deliver deforestation- and conversion-free food supply chains as part of a new model of agricultural production that optimizes food production enhance rural livelihoods, and protects and restores the natural environment.
